10 Mind-Expanding Psychedelic Documentaries You Need to See (2013–2025)

Best Psychedelic Documentaries

The psychedelic renaissance is no longer a whisper from the underground. It's a cinematic wave crashing into the mainstream with the force of myth rediscovered. From lushly crafted Netflix docuseries to raw, visionary independent films, the modern psychedelic documentary is reshaping how we tell stories of altered states, inner healing, and the mycelial web of life itself.

It’s been a while since I’ve shared any editorial content here, but I’m feeling the pull to return. With a bit more space in my days now, thanks in part to the kids becoming more independent, I’m finding the time (and inspiration) to dive back into these creative pursuits. So here is list of recommended psychedelic documentaries that I have enjoyed from releases over the past decade or so.

These are not just films. They are initiation chambers, lens-polished pathways into realms once reserved for medicine men and mystics. Whether you approach them as a seasoned psychonaut or simply a cinephile hungry for truth told sideways, this curated collection reveals a deeper current flowing beneath our cultural surface — one that is sacred, scientific, and utterly transformative.

Here are ten essential psychedelic documentaries from the last decade.

1. Fantastic Fungi (2019)

Fantastic Fungi Documentary

Narrated by Brie Larson and guided by renowned mycologist Paul Stamets, this documentary explores the hidden world of fungi through dazzling time-lapse cinematography. It dives deep into mushrooms’ roles in ecological networks, their historical use in medicine and spirituality, and their emerging potential in treating mental health conditions. A visually stunning and heart-opening introduction to the mycelial world.

Building on this foundation, the film also highlights the astonishing intelligence of fungal networks, showing how mycelium can transmit information, break down toxins, and even influence the behavior of other organisms. Interviews with scientists, conservationists, and indigenous knowledge keepers expand the discussion, emphasizing fungi’s role in biodiversity and ecosystem restoration.

The documentary touches on innovative uses of fungi in sustainable design, such as biodegradable materials, myco-remediation, and even fungal-based leather alternatives. With its rich blend of science, storytelling, and awe-inspiring visuals, the film not only educates but inspires a profound respect for these ancient organisms and their vital connection to life on Earth.

2. How to Change Your Mind (2022)

How to Change Your Mind (2022)

Based on the best-selling book by Michael Pollan, this Netflix miniseries explores the history, science, and therapeutic potential of four key psychedelics: LSD, psilocybin, MDMA, and mescaline. Each episode offers deep dives into their clinical use, cultural history, and Pollan’s own reflections, helping normalize the conversation around psychedelic healing.

Blending personal narrative with expert interviews and archival footage, the series unpacks the complex legacy of these substances—from their indigenous ceremonial use and countercultural explosion in the 1960s to their modern resurgence in psychiatry and neuroscience.

Viewers hear from researchers, therapists, patients, and spiritual practitioners who are shaping the new psychedelic renaissance, offering perspectives on how these compounds are being used to treat conditions like PTSD, addiction, anxiety, and end-of-life depression.

With elegant visuals, grounded storytelling and a thoughtful tone, the series opens a space for curiosity and hope. It challenges outdated stigmas and invites audiences to reconsider the role psychedelics may play in the future of mental health and human consciousness.

3. Neurons to Nirvana (2013)

Neurons to Nirvana documentary (2013)

This investigative documentary presents an informed and balanced look at the resurgence of psychedelic therapy. With voices like Dennis McKenna, Gabor Maté, and Rick Doblin, the film examines how substances like LSD, MDMA, ayahuasca, psilocybin, and cannabis are returning to the forefront of mental health research and treatment.

Through compelling interviews with scientists, clinicians, trauma survivors, and indigenous leaders, the film explores the growing body of evidence supporting psychedelics as powerful tools for healing. It looks at the historical suppression of these substances during the War on Drugs and how changing public perception and promising clinical results are now shifting the narrative.

The documentary also investigates the ethical and cultural implications of this revival, questioning how modern science can integrate ancient plant medicine wisdom without appropriation. It offers a comprehensive overview of a movement that is transforming not only psychiatric treatment but also how we think about consciousness, trauma, and the roots of human suffering.

4. AYA: Awakenings (2013)

AYA: Awakenings (2013)

Based on the work of journalist Rak Razam, this documentary plunges into the Amazon rainforest to uncover the ancient rituals and visions surrounding ayahuasca. Combining interviews, animations, and personal narration, the film explores the transformation that occurs when Western minds meet indigenous shamanic traditions.

As Razam journeys deep into the heart of the Peruvian jungle, he participates in ceremonies led by curanderos and shamans, capturing the raw, often intense experiences that unfold during ayahuasca visions. The documentary weaves together his personal awakening with broader themes of spiritual crisis, cultural exchange, and the search for meaning in an increasingly disconnected world. Featuring striking visual sequences that mirror the inner psychedelic landscape, the film serves as both a journalistic inquiry and a mystical initiation.

With its blend of anthropological insight and deeply personal storytelling, Aya: Awakenings invites viewers to confront their own inner worlds and consider the transformative power of ancient plant medicines in the modern age.

5. Dosed (2019)

Dosed documentary (2019)

A raw and emotional documentary that follows Adrianne, a woman struggling with depression, anxiety, and addiction, as she seeks healing through psilocybin mushrooms and iboga. The film presents an unfiltered look into the challenges of mental illness and the hope that psychedelic-assisted therapy can offer.

Shot over several years, Dosed captures Adrianne’s deeply personal journey with remarkable honesty and vulnerability, documenting not only her inner battles but also the risks, doubts, and breakthroughs she experiences along the way. The film features candid conversations with psychedelic facilitators, addiction specialists, and medical professionals, shedding light on the urgent need for new approaches to mental health care.

By focusing on the emotional toll of untreated trauma and the often limited effectiveness of conventional treatments, the documentary powerfully illustrates why many are turning to alternative therapies. With its intimate storytelling and compassionate lens, Dosed offers a compelling case for the healing potential of psychedelics and is a moving portrait of courage and transformation.

6. The Sunshine Makers (2015)

The Sunshine Makers (2015)

This documentary tells the fascinating story of Nicholas Sand and Tim Scully - two idealistic chemists responsible for creating millions of doses of Orange Sunshine LSD during the 1960s. It’s a tale of counterculture revolution, personal sacrifice, and a vision of a more awakened world.

Blending archival footage with first-person interviews and a pulsating psychedelic soundtrack, The Sunshine Makers dives into the heart of the 1960s underground movement revealing how Sand and Scully saw LSD not as a party drug, but as a tool for global transformation.

Determined to turn on the world, they risked everything in their quest to mass-produce pure acid and distribute it freely, believing that widespread psychedelic experiences could catalyze peace and enlightenment. As law enforcement closed in, their story became one of loyalty, betrayal, and the tension between utopian dreams and harsh reality.

Both a thrilling true-crime saga and a spiritual odyssey, the film captures the idealism and intensity of an era and the enduring legacy of two men who tried to change the world one trip at a time.

7. Trip of Compassion (2017)

Trip of Compassion (2017)

One of the most powerful documentaries on MDMA-assisted psychotherapy, this Israeli film documents real therapy sessions with PTSD patients undergoing treatment. Emotional, vulnerable, and groundbreaking, it gives an intimate look at trauma healing in a clinical setting.

Trip of Compassion breaks new ground by allowing viewers to witness unfiltered, deeply personal therapy sessions, moments rarely seen on film. With unprecedented access, the documentary follows patients as they confront their darkest memories with the support of trained therapists and the aid of MDMA, a compound shown to reduce fear and enhance emotional processing.

Through their stories, the film explores the devastating impact of trauma and the profound relief that can come from reconnecting with one's own emotions. Interwoven with expert commentary and scientific context, the documentary sheds light on the clinical protocols, ethical considerations, and growing global movement behind psychedelic-assisted therapy.

Trip of Compassion is a testament to human resilience and the potential for deep healing when science, compassion, and courage come together.

8. Descending the Mountain (2021)

Descending the Mountain (2021)

This experimental documentary captures a unique psilocybin study conducted with Zen Buddhist monks on Mount Rigi in Switzerland. Blending neuroscience, mysticism, and meditation, it offers a rare look at how psychedelics and mindfulness intersect in controlled, spiritual environments.

Descending the Mountain brings together science and spirituality in a bold and elegant exploration of consciousness. The film documents a carefully designed study in which experienced monks, already trained in profound states of awareness, ingest psilocybin under scientific observation. It offering a glimpse into how altered states might enhance, complement, or deepen meditative insight.

Featuring the perspectives of neuroscientist Franz Vollenweider and Zen master Vanja Palmers, the documentary unpacks the results with philosophical curiosity and scientific rigor. Stunning visuals of the Swiss landscape mirror the inner journeys of the participants, while measured discussions on ego dissolution, unity, and compassion prompt larger questions about the future of spiritual practice.

Meditative, poetic, and thought-provoking, this film is a quiet yet revolutionary contribution to the growing conversation around psychedelics as tools for insight and transformation.

9. Psychonautics: A Comic’s Exploration of Psychedelics (2018)

Psychonautics: A Comic’s Exploration of Psychedelics (2018)

Stand-up comedian Shane Mauss takes viewers on a humorous yet deeply insightful journey through his own experiences with psychedelics. Featuring interviews with scientists and visuals of his trips, the film balances entertainment with education about the mind’s altered states.

The documentary blends Shane’s signature wit with candid vulnerability as he explores the effects of substances like psilocybin, LSD, DMT, and ayahuasca. Through his personal highs and lows, including a mental health crisis that forces him to confront the limits of self-experimentation, the film opens up a raw and relatable dialogue about curiosity, ego, and the search for meaning.

Interviews with leading researchers in neuroscience and psychology provide grounding context, helping to bridge the gap between Mauss’s wild experiences and the latest scientific insights. Visually trippy and emotionally honest, the documentary challenges stereotypes of psychedelic use while celebrating the mysteries that lie within the altered mind.

10. Psychedelia (2021)

Psychedelia (2021, revised version)

This concise and thoughtful documentary provides a broad overview of the psychedelic experience, from early psychiatric research and 60s counterculture to today’s revival of medical and spiritual use. Ideal for beginners seeking a historical and scientific introduction.

Psychedelia skillfully traces the complex journey of psychedelic substances through decades of social, political, and scientific change. The film highlights pioneering figures such as Timothy Leary and Albert Hofmann, while exploring the cultural upheavals sparked by widespread recreational use and the subsequent backlash that halted research for decades.

Interweaving expert interviews, archival footage, and evocative visuals, it examines how psychedelics are once again gaining legitimacy in clinical trials aimed at treating mental health disorders and enhancing well-being. Beyond science, the documentary also touches on the spiritual dimensions of psychedelics and their influence on art, music, and consciousness expansion.

Clear, balanced, and engaging, this film serves as a perfect gateway for anyone curious about the multifaceted history and future potential of psychedelics.

So there we have it. My quick look at a few of the docos that have really captured me over the past decade or so. These films aren’t just documentaries ,they’re doorways. Some open slowly while others hit you like a cosmic freight train. But all of them invite us to take a step sideways and to rethink how we heal, what consciousness really is, and how deeply connected we are to nature, spirit, and each other.

These films help us tune in to ourselves, to the moment, and to something much larger.

Got a favorite psychedelic doc that changed your perspective? Drop a comment ! I’d love to hear what resonated.

PsyAmb 147 - NeuroGlyph

In this journey we drift through some fresh sonic terrain, guided by the genre-fluid alchemy of Mantis Mash (Natan Lenski). Two tunes here are drawn from his new and highly recommended release "Memory Trails" which melds psydub, glitch, and psybass into a shimmering landscape of deep rhythms and unexpected turns. Along the way, we encounter dub currents from Youth's Dub Trees project and another Youth tune infused with the unmistakable touch of Gaudi, a long-time architect of dub's more expansive realms.

Woven into this mix are moments of trance-inducing ethnodub from the great Greg Hunter, appearing here under his Dubsahara moniker. Hypnotizer brings tribal echoes and ancient textures, with NatureElement on remix duties to stir the dust. Balancing these denser elements are smoother, soul-soothing vibrations from our old companion Kuba, and a touch of celestial dub from the French sonic mystic, Squazoid.

This mix is meant as a gentle voyage of mostly mellow passage peppered with detours and daydreams. It invites you to sink in and perhaps discover a new resonance with the artists featured here.

The cover art for this mix is an original illustration inspired by the ineffable nature of the psychedelic experience. Created using my usual ritual of Copic markers, multiliners, and a hint of colored pencil for shade and depth, it was later scanned and polished in Photoshop.
