PsyBreaks Download - PsyAmb 48

I've been listening to quite a bit of psybreak ( psychedelic breakbeat ) music of late so I thought it might be fun to make a mix of psybreaks for you all. I listened to psybreaks back in 1996-98 when psybreaks were kind of a new thing I guess and the genre experienced a brief period of popularity. It seems to be coming back again but with a harder, twistier sound that I'm also quite enjoying. So here is a mix that incorporates some of the newer sounds I've been listening to over the last few years.
This mix isn't purely breaks however - it starts out with some nice psybient tunes for the first 30 minutes or so. It gradually builds up into a stomping breaks set for the last hour. I'm not sure if I'll do too many breaks mixes as it might be a bit too loud and energetic for the music I usually post here. Still, it was a fun diversion and I think some of you guys might get a a kick out it.

We kick things off today with a track from long time psy and world music producer Adham Shaikh. Adham is well known to fans of psychedelic ambient music and has also enjoyed great success in the world music stage including a 2006 Juno award nomination for his album Fusion.

TV and movie soundtracks, stage audio and production work are just some of the areas where Adham finds an outlet for his endless musical talents. This opening track comes from the remix project CD "Refractions" which is now available for purchase through Adham's website.

Little Fluffy Clouds - The Orb

Rejoice ! The Orb have a brand spanking new album out soon. So I thought it might be worth revisiting where it all started for me with The Orb and that is back in 1990 with the release of their now classic track "Little Fluffy Clouds". For me this track was a major influence in my appreciation of chillout music.

It bridged the gap between the pure ambient music and baggy Manchester pop I had been listening to at the time. I was young and The Orb seemed to me to be the epitome of all things cool, riding a wave of their own creation. I grabbed my board and began to paddle.

A lot has been written about this track over the years. This is due to it's contentious use of samples at a time when sampling was still somewhat of a gray area.

The release of Little Fluffy Clouds involved a settlement case and  royalties paid to other artists whose material The Orb made use of ( the track is pretty much entirely sample based ! ).

One of the best articles about LFCs is the following one uploaded by Sound On Sound writer Richard Buskin as part of SOS's "Classic Tracks" collection ( hours of great reading by the way ) in August of 2011. So read on to find out how The Orb constructed this extraordinary tune.

Papadosio - Divine Moments Of Truth ( Shpongle Cover )

Papadosio is a live five piece electronic rock jam band for the modern era. Think Ozric Tentacles mixed with a bit more modern electronica and heavier grooves. They are steadily gaining a large dedicated fan base from their home in Athens OH and are now spreading around the US and the world via online social networks such as twitter and their Facebook page.

I ran across the group by chance on YouTube where I discovered a rather cool cover version they do of Shpongle's "Divine Moments Of Truth" ( see below ) . On their website they have a full tour schedule and a number of albums you can download for free too ! Check em out - you wont be disappointed. Oh, there is a also this Archive.Org page of some life recordings which you can download and listen to as well.
